When clients Premal and Mercy approached us for their new farmhouse in Alibaug, their vision went beyond architecture and interiors: they wanted their space tuned. Mercy is a musician, and together with Premal they share a deep relationship with sound — a sensibility that extended naturally into how they wanted their home to feel. Brought in as sound design consultants, we worked in close collaboration with the project's Vastu consultant to map five elemental zones across the property, proposing a dedicated sound installation for each — grounding the home's spatial energy in both ancient principle and living resonance. The project sits at the heart of our design practice: the belief that spaces can be actively shaped through sound, and that the right sonic interventions, placed with intention, fundamentally alter how a space feels to inhabit.
Three instruments have been executed as part of the first phase, each corresponding to a Vastu element and placed at its prescribed location within the home. A gong positioned at the centre of the house anchors the Earth element — its deep, sustained resonance radiating outward through the living spaces. At the entrance, a plate bell embodies Fire, greeting arrivals with a bright, clarifying tone. A wind chime installed in the entrance foyer carries the Ether element, its delicate movement and sound activating the transitional energy of the threshold.
Two further installations are conceived and awaiting execution. A fountain at the entrance driveway will bring the Water element into the property, its flowing sound establishing a sense of arrival long before one steps inside. Deep within the grounds, a sound installation amongst the chikoo grove will animate the Air element — weaving sound into the landscape itself, and completing the elemental tuning of the home as a whole.
